Strasbourg is a quaint town perfect for leisurely walks, admiring architecture, visiting churches, and soaking in beautiful scenery. If you get a chance to visit around Christmas time, I have heard it is magical.

Metz: A Medieval Marvel

Arriving in Metz on Sunday was perfect for me. This city is easy to explore within a day, though I would have loved to spend more time there.

An Unexpected Cultural Encounter

Soon after arriving, I witnessed an unexpected cultural event: a swarm of men and police outside the hostel, throwing tear gas and getting into fights. At first, I was taken back, thinking something awful was happening. However, this turned out to be related to a football (soccer) game later that day. Metz’s locals celebrate with chanting, setting off fireworks, and rowdy street behavior, giving me an unplanned yet fascinating glimpse into their spirited culture.

Metz is a fascinating 3,000-year-old UNESCO town that blends historical charm with contemporary culture.

• Village Taison: Learn about the legend of the Graoully and Saint Clement, who protected the town by slaying the dragon and throwing it into the river.
• Metz Cathedral: Visit the Gothic-style cathedral, where intricate details, artistry, history, and largest stain glass windows in the world make it a must-see.
• Basilica of Saint Pierre aux Nonnains: Enjoy the oldest church in France, dating back to the 4th century.
• Port des Allemands: Walk through the German Gate and immerse yourself in the history of the town and its predecessors.
• Ruins: Keep an eye out for roman ruins throughout the city!
